It’s been wonderful to witness the expansion of AED use in police squad vehicles over the past few years, but today’s police AED save story has a bit of a twist. Police Commander Gary Dunlap of Columbus, Ohio suffered sudden cardiac arrest last week after finishing a boxing session at the city’s police training academy. Commander Dunlap was very fortunate to have several other officers around him who began performing CPR.

Today, we’re saluting not only a heroic police officer who saved a life. but also the entire Dunwoody, GA police department for their commitment to keeping their community safe with AEDs. Earlier this month, Officer Chris Irwin was headed home from a 12 hour shift when he heard a medical call on the radio. He turned his car around and headed to a nearby office building where a man had suffered cardiac arrest. Fortunately, Officer Irwin was able to use his department issued automated external defibrillator to give the necessary shocks to the patient before further help arrived.
