Bill Butler, a longtime volunteer at Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center, was attending a volunteer orientation at the facility last month when he suddenly collapsed. An ambulance was called and would arrive eight short minutes later. However, Butler didn’t have eight minutes to wait for medical attention.
Fortunately for Butler, there were three nurses and a retired EMT present at the orientation and they jumped into action. One immediately began performing CPR while the others grabbed the facility’s defibrillator, a Zoll AED Plus, and shocked his heart back into rhythm. Butler was conscious again by the time the ambulance arrived.
While it was fortunate that so many medical professionals were present at the time of Butler’s incident, anyone can learn how to perform CPR and use an AED. Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center partnered with the Bend Fire Department last week to inform the community about just how important it is for businesses to have an AED on-site. AEDs have to be paired with CPR to be effective, and AEDs like the Zoll AED Plus come with voice instructions to guide users through both CPR and use of the device.
Butler spoke at the event to thank everyone for their quick action that saved his life and acknowledge that if Healing Reins hadn’t had an AED at the facility, he probably would not have survived. The cost of AEDs are definitely outweighed by the peace-of-mind that they provide for everyone involved with a company.
