Matt Spencer, DXE Founder, Says Farewell

ms blog

I started this company with my brand new wife in a small apartment in 1999. Since then, we have seen numerous milestones, and weathered many storms. There are many people to thank for making DXE what it is today. I will attempt to recognize all that deserve this thanks, but forgive me if I fall short.

Nothing in business is possible without customers. We have had the pleasure of serving over 25,000 of you over the years. We have seen public awareness about the importance of CPR and AED placement grow, and heard many stories of lives being saved. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to hear a story that involves one of our devices. Thank you to all the people that are serving the public on the front lines with the life-saving equipment DXE provides.

There are several vendors that have been instrumental in our growth. Without naming them, I can honestly say that DXE doesn’t get out of second gear without the trust, support and guidance you have provided. Many of these vendors I count as dear, personal friends. You know who you are, and I hope you know how much you mean to me and this company.

Thank you to all the folks at Sarnova that welcomed us into your family in 2013. I’ve learned so much from you and I am a better person for the experience. I believe wholeheartedly in your mission and your leadership. Thanks to Jeff, Mark, Jim, Tom, Fred and Jon for teaching me how a business is really run. You guys are the best.

Our present and former employees have created a unique culture where dogs are welcome and social events are fun and frequent. Our goal has always been to have our culture forward-facing and on display in our interactions with customers and vendors. Culture cannot be faked, nor duplicated. It is an original creation that belongs to the company and the people that work there. Honesty, integrity, partnership. These are only words until you prove that they are values that drive your business. I have strived to make them words we live by and I hope it has had something to do with our success.

Finally, I want to thank my family. My parents and grandparents loaned me $15,000 to start DXE when I was 25 years old. I’m not sure if they ever expected to see that money again, but that investment started something special. Ruth and Mom, thank you for working with such a tyrant for so many years and always having my back. My first hire, Tommy, has been my right-hand-man for over 15 years. We could have not done this without you. My wife, Julie, has endured bad moods, relentless travel and long hours for far too long. Thank you, wife, for your support, patience and counsel in good times and bad. Oh, and for those four beautiful babies you have given me. I look forward to seeing more of you all very soon.

And with that, I would like to say how humbled I am to have worked with all of you on this journey. I wish you all the best and look forward to DXE continuing to grow under new leadership. Thank you for allowing me to play this role. I am grateful for the entire experience and will never forget all the people that made it happen.
