Earlier this month, Melvin Weaver’s life was saved in part due to the death of Ron McElliott, who dropped dead of sudden cardiac arrest over 15 years ago after a 10K run in Chula Vista. McElliott was a civic leader who inspired others, including his friend and former San Diego City Councilman Jim Madaffer, who took to spreading the word about AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) after his friend’s passing. This past weekend, a baseball umpire in Liberty, MO was saved with an AED – a personal AED unit from Denise Henning’s car. During an afternoon of baseball games this past weekend, Denise was nearby when one of the umpire’s suddenly collapsed at the concession stand. AED Save: Hockey Club Player Suffers SCA on the Ice

Earlier this month, 45-year-old Bill Hoppenrath collapsed at Coon Rapids Ice Center in Minnesota, where he is a member of a private hockey club.  At the final minutes of a game, Hoppenrath suddenly experienced shortness of breath, feeling dizzy, and as he turned to pass the puck, fell to the ice. Fortunately, several of the members of the hockey club were off-duty or retired police officers, firefighters and paramedics trained in CPR and AEDs. AED Save: 13-Year-Old Boy Saved During Basketball Practice

13-Year-Old Seth is on the sidelines this basketball season, but hopes to return to the court next year.

Two fast-acting coaches saved the life of a 13-year-old boy, Seth O’Neill, at Cerro Gordo Elementary School in Illinois in December. During basketball practice, the teen was doing conditioning running when he suddenly appeared to trip and fall face-first to the gym floor. AED Save: Senior Woman Saved During a Game of Cards

During a routine game of cards at Dogwood Pavillion, a social recreation center for older adults, a senior named Delores suddenly stated she felt “dizzy” and then passed out. Arrested Teen Helps Save Police Officer

A teenager in Ft. Lauderdale will be honored next week, along with three police officers for aiding in the rescue of another police officer. In September, Officer Franklin Foulks was processing paperwork charges for Jamal Rutledge, 17, when suddenly he collapsed from his chair. After witnessing the officer collapse and clenching his chest, Rutledge began kicking the gate and yelling to alert nearby officers. Continue reading Arrested Teen Helps Save Police Officer
