Cleaning your Physio Control AED or Manual Defibrillator

An often-overlooked part of maintaining your Physio-Control AED or manual defibrillator is cleaning your device. Along with monthly inspections, regularly cleaning your device helps to ensure it’s ready to be used in an emergency. Physio-Control defibrillators are often used by medical personnel and need to be cleaned frequently. AEDs, on the other hand, spend most of their time in a cabinet or mounted on a wall, and may not require cleaning as frequently.

When cleaning your Physio-Control device, it’s important to use the correct cleaning solutions to prevent damaging the unit. Take a look below and find the manufacturer recommended cleaning agent for your specific device. Perform the following steps in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions:

    1. Wash your hands
    2. Apply gloves
    3. Check the AED or manual defibrillator for any damage or contamination
    4. Remove AED from the protective case (if not done so already), do not remove the battery.
    5. Clean all outside surfaces, take care not to allow fluid to access ports or battery connections.
    6. Disinfect all outside surfaces and be sure not to allow fluid into ports or battery connections.
    7. Remove gloves and wash hands.
    8. If needed, replace disposable items (pads, razor, barrier masks).
    9. Check that the readiness indicator is showing green and put back into the case.
    10. Store AED in a clean, dry area.
